Sept. 27 I was interviewed today at Cablevision’s Hauppauge public access studio about “Heroes to the End” and about my work with United Veterans Beacon House. The show has been hosted for the past 12 years by former Nassau County Veterans Services head Ed Aulman, who served with the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam. The segment will air at 7:30 p.m. on Mondays in North Hempstead Town on Cablevision Ch. 20 and 9 p.m. on Thursdays on Verizon Fios Ch……
Sept. 23 Newsday takes great pains to tell people where to pick apples, take hayrides and view nautical art. But when a group involved in human rights work asks for a little help to spread the news about an interfaith event by running an article beforehand, it took Newsday 12 days to respond to my memo and the urging of our public relations firm Epoch 5…and an article appeared today, three days AFTER the event. A piece on Colin and…..
Sept. 21 Artemis Joukowsky’s next film project will involve accompanying Great Neck couple Latifa and Colin Woodhouse to Greece this fall on their third trip to work with refugees, most displaced by the war in Syria. Joukowsky made the announcement Sept. 20 at the premiere of “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War,” a documentary on which he collaborated with Ken Burns. It was screened that night at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset and also aired on…..
Sept. 20 Newsday should just shut itself down. It has no ads, no content of any import except sports. It has no leadership, no senior staff, no spirit. What leaders it has could not spot a story if it hit them smack in the face. * * * Tonight at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset, there will be a 7 p.m. screening of the documentary “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War,” followed by a discussion on…..

Sept. 14 I renewed my website for another year through my publisher iUniverse of Bloomington, Ind. Since Sept. 22 of last year, the publisher reports, I have sold 13 eBooks and 31 softcover copies of “Heroes to the End,” generating modest royalty payments which I’m donating to United Veterans Beacon House.
Sept. 12: I was pleased to represent United Veterans Beacon House today at the Michael M. McCarthy Foundation annual golf tournament at Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James. It was a beautiful day, and more than 100 players tested the 6,643-yard par-72 layout on western Suffolk’s North Shore. The foundation was nice enough to allow Beacon House to share proceeds from the event with our good friends at the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. Participants played 18 holes, had…..

Sept. 12: Fifty years ago in late November 1966 “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” by The Supremes was No. 1 on the pop record charts and those with hits in the top 10 included The Beach Boys, Mitch Ryder, Johnny Rivers, The Monkees and Donovan. The average price of a house in the U.S. was $23,300. Eggs were 60 cents a dozen. Gas cost 32 cents a gallon, and we had 385,000 troops in Vietnam by the end of the…..
Sept. 6: By Jim Smith smithjimvet@gmail.com (Part 2) If you want to have the vacation of a lifetime, my wife Lynn and I suggest a two-week cruise to Alaska on Holland America. We recently took that voyage on the MS Maasdam with retired radio personality Garrison Keillor. We had 42 meals on the ship; they were outstanding. We went to a show almost every night. But what made the trip truly great were onboard lectures and shore excursions. We attended…..
